So many of you will remember that I did this piece
[link] for the Ahsoka-Fan-Club competition. The onyl time I've ever had a premium membership here was when I won one for my
[link] "Actaeus - The Guardian" piece...one I've actually been thinking about re-doing lately. Anyway I thought I'd try for a nother contest to win a membership.
Anyway, my Ahsoka's Beach Party did not place in the top three for the contest. There was definitely spotty judging if you ask me. For example this piece received an 8/10 for color, where as a piece with only 3 predominant tones received a 10/10. I had as many colors in a single character...let alone in all 8. For me anyway, my piece was veritable rainbow-vomit. I guess I wont be doing any more of the Ahsoka-Fan-Club contests. The contest claimed to be about your favorite summer activity. They should have just come right out and said: "This is not about art, summer, or activity, its about creating the most risqué, DA-approvable picture of Ahsoka you can." That I would have understood. I hate to complain too much, because there are definitely pieces in the top 3 that deserved to win (and honestly, I didn't think I would win and I wouldn't have chosen my piece to win either. However, I expected to at least place, especially with 8x the effort of every other entry). Really, the entire premise of the contest was a joke and judging was non-existent. I'm very glad I made this piece something artistically viable and not just borderline pedo-art. (Think I'm being harsh? One pic was removed by DA for underage nudity and still judged for the competition)
I guess this is one thing that ticks me off about DA. I love that anyone can get their art out, but oftentimes the site ceases to become about art and becomes more about personal desire. I wrote a whole paragraph explaining my piece, both as art and my mental process behind it. There are some really great artists on here who get publicity they'd never get...but the rest might be people getting more than they deserve. Is art really art without effort? Without intent? Being traditionally trained myself I tend to say no. Everyday I see nude photos in the Daily Deviations. I don't see most of these as original, but you'd think they hand them out just for signing a contract with a model to take off their clothes. Not that everything I do is some epic statement about art. I do my just for fun pieces now and again, but I really do try to make good art, even if I'm doing a HURRRDURRR piece just because it strikes me as fun or even sometimes sexy.
DA has this dark side, being about acceptance. Like the Ahsoka contest, it wasn't about art, or even quality in my opinion (as the best quality piece imo didn't finish first)...its about self-satisfaction of seeing what you want how you want it. The most popular deviations everyday are little kittens, flowers, and your favorite Pokemon characters. In this sense to me, DA is no more than Photobucket, where I expect to find a lot of pictures of Robert Pattinson, fluffy bunnies, and glitter animations of "Princess," but very little substance. And that kind of ticks me off, because I really wish DA could be (and should be) better than that. It should be about art, and not some attempt just to find the sexiest picture of your favorite character (Ahsoka) wrapped up in the guise of a substance-driven competition judged by actual art criticism.
As always, thanks for the favs, watches, and especially comments. I have over 10,000 page-views now and am very humbled.
